According to the CDC, an estimated 440,000 deaths are caused by tobacco smoking in the USA alone; second hand smoke is responsible for around 50,000 of those deaths. This is a very grueling fact, as these were not smokers to begin with, but they still had to suffer the consequences of smoking. It makes me wonder how many people have been harmed by my previous smoking habit. However, worldwide it is much worse, a staggering 5.4 million deaths are caused by tobacco smoking. That’s one every 6.5 seconds, according to the WHO. In the 20th century, somewhere around 100 million people were killed! The average lifespan of a smoker is significantly shorter than that of a non-smoker: Smoking doesn't just cut a few months off the end of your life. It reduces the life of the average smoker by 12-15 years. By quitting smoking as soon as possible, you can remove these risks.

Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body; causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general. Below is list of some of the diseases you can expect from tobacco smoking:
Cancer
• Cancer is the second leading cause of death and was among the first diseases causually linked to smoking.1
• Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths in men and almost 80% of lung cancer deaths in women. The risk of dying from lung cancer is more than 23 times higher among men who smoke cigarettes, and about 13 times higher among women who smoke cigarettes compared with never smokers.1
• Smoking causes cancers of the bladder, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx (voice box), esophagus, cervix, kidney, lung, pancreas, and stomach, and causes acute myeloid leukemia.1
• Rates of cancers related to cigarette smoking vary widely among members of racial/ethnic groups, but are generally highest in African-American men.
Cardiovascular Disease (Heart and Circulatory System)
• Smoking causes coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.1Cigarette smokers are 2–4 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease than nonsmokers.6
• Cigarette smoking approximately doubles a person's risk for stroke.7,8
• Cigarette smoking causes reduced circulation by narrowing the blood vessels (arteries). Smokers are more than 10 times as likely as nonsmokers to develop peripheral vascular disease.9
• Smoking causes abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Respiratory Disease and Other Effects
• Cigarette smoking is associated with a tenfold increase in the risk of dying from chronic obstructive lung disease.7 About 90% of all deaths from chronic obstructive lung diseases are attributable to cigarette smoking.1
• Cigarette smoking has many adverse reproductive and early childhood effects, including an increased risk for infertility, preterm delivery, stillbirth, low birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).1
• Postmenopausal women who smoke have lower bone density than women who never smoked. Women who smoke have an increased risk for hip fracture than never smokers.
There is hope however, most people are beginning to recognize tha hazards of smoking, and most smokers want to kick the habit. But quitting smoking can be hard for many people. I was able quit smoking cold turkey by the help of a program I found online, you can read more about it here.
Most governments and institutions, aside from tobacco companies are distancing themselves from smoking, and implement preventive campaigns, like spreading, and making information about the hazards of smoking available, leading to a decline in new smokers. Over the last half century, people who take up smoking has substantially decreased, simply because people are more educated today and know smoking is harmfull to the body.
